چکیده

In the operator splitting solution of atmospheric transport-chemistry problems modeling air pollution, a major task is the numerical integration of the stii ODE systems describing the chemical transformations. In this note a numerical comparison is presented between two special purpose solvers developed for this task. Note: This report is one of a series on the development of algorithms for long range transport air pollution models. We gratefully acknowledge support from the RIVM for the projects EUSMOG and CIRK.

Benchmarking stiff ODE solvers for atmospheric chemistry problems II: Rosenbrock solvers

In the numerical simulation of atmospheric transport-chemistry processes, a major task is the integration of the stii systems of ordinary diierential equations describing the chemical transformations. It is therefore of interest to systematically search for stii solvers which can be identiied as close to optimal for atmospheric applications. In this paper we continue our investigation from 20] ...

On second derivative 3-stage Hermite--Birkhoff--Obrechkoff methods for stiff ODEs: A-stable up to order 10 with variable stepsize

Variable-step (VS) second derivative $k$-step $3$-stage Hermite--Birkhoff--Obrechkoff (HBO) methods of order $p=(k+3)$, denoted by HBO$(p)$ are constructed as a combination of linear $k$-step methods of order $(p-2)$ and a second derivative two-step diagonally implicit $3$-stage Hermite--Birkhoff method of order 5 (DIHB5) for solving stiff ordinary differential equations. The main reason for co...

Benchmarking Stii Ode Solvers for Atmospheric Chemistry Problems I: Implicit versus Explicit

In many applications of atmospheric transport-chemistry problems, a major task is the numerical integration of the stii systems of ordinary diierential equations describing the chemical transformations. This paper presents a comprehensive numerical comparison between ve dedicated explicit and four implicit solvers for a set of seven benchmark problems from actual applications. The implicit solv...

Gauss-Seidel Iteration for Stiff ODES from Chemical Kinetics

A simple Gauss-Seidel technique is proposed which exploits the special form of the chemical kinetics equations. Classical Aitken extrapolation is applied to accelerate convergence. The technique is meant for implementation in stii solvers that are used in long range transport air pollution codes using operator splitting. Splitting necessarily gives rise to a great deal of integration restarts. ...
